The Jatka Conservation Week-2023 is being observed aiming to create awareness about the preservation of hilsa fry and discourage all concerned, including fishermen, from catching the fish.
The week which began on April 1 will end on April 7.
The Jatka Conservation Week is being observed in 20 districts including Barisal, Bhola, Pirozpur, Jhalakati, Chandpur, and Barguna.
This year, the theme of the week is 'If Jatka is conserved, Hilsa production will increase'.
The fisheries and livestock ministry warned that if anyone violates the ban on caching jatka, they will be punished as per the law.
Bangladesh produces 5.67 lakh metric tonnes of hilsa in 2021-22 fiscal which was only 2.98 lakh metric tonnes in 2008-09 due to proper preservation of mother hilsa during the breeding season.
The government is providing food assistance to the fishermen during the week.
