Raphael Glucksmann, a French Member of the European Parliament, has called for the United States to return the Statue of Liberty to France, criticizing recent US policies under former President Donald Trump.
The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the US in 1886, has long been a symbol of freedom and a welcoming beacon for immigrants. Glucksmann, a vocal critic of Trump’s stance on Ukraine and his actions against scientific research, accused the US of "siding with tyrants" and undermining intellectual freedom.
In a speech at his Place Publique party convention, Glucksmann expressed his disapproval of Trump’s policies, including the crackdown on immigration and cuts to federal research funding. He argued that the US no longer represents the values of liberty and justice symbolized by the statue.
Glucksmann, who has been an outspoken supporter of Ukraine, also criticized European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, for insufficient support for Ukraine. His remarks underscore growing tensions over the war in Ukraine and the shifting values he perceives in the US under Trump’s leadership.
