The two leaders discussed key issues on Sunday, including the Russia-Ukraine war, counterterrorism, and defense cooperation, according to a statement from Turkiye’s Presidential Communications Directorate; reads a Daily Sabah report.
Erdogan expressed Turkiye’s support for Trump’s initiatives to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict, reaffirming his commitment to a just and lasting peace. He also voiced hope for a more constructive, solution-oriented approach in Turkiye-U.S. relations under Trump’s leadership.
On counterterrorism, Erdogan subtly urged the U.S. to reconsider its partnership with groups threatening Turkiye in Syria. He emphasized the need for stability in the region, the establishment of an effective new administration, and the lifting of sanctions to promote normalization and facilitate the return of Syrian refugees.
Regarding defense cooperation, Erdogan called for the removal of CAATSA sanctions on Turkiye’s defense industry, the completion of the F-16 fighter jet procurement process, and Turkiye’s reintegration into the F-35 program. While defense disputes have strained bilateral ties, Ankara remains hopeful for resolution and closer cooperation with its NATO ally.
Erdogan stressed that evolving global and regional dynamics require enhanced consultation between Ankara and Washington. He reiterated Turkiye’s commitment to diplomatic efforts for regional stability and emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with the U.S. in key areas.
