China’s Baidu announced on Sunday the launch of two new AI models, including a reasoning-focused model that claims to rival DeepSeek's latest offering, as the competition in the AI sector intensifies.
Chinese AI startup DeepSeek recently made waves by introducing models comparable to top U.S. offerings at a fraction of the cost, sparking renewed global competition, reports Reuters.
In response, Baidu introduced the ERNIE X1 model, which it says matches DeepSeek R1’s performance at half the price, boasting enhanced understanding, planning, reflection, and evolution capabilities.
Baidu also claims that X1 is the first deep-thinking model to autonomously use tools.
Additionally, Baidu's ERNIE 4.5 model features advanced multimodal understanding, improved language capabilities, and enhanced logic, memory, and emotional intelligence, making it adept at interpreting online memes and satire.
Despite being one of China’s first tech giants to introduce a ChatGPT-style chatbot, Baidu has faced challenges in gaining widespread adoption for its Ernie large language model, even though it claims comparable performance to OpenAI's GPT-4.
Multimodal AI systems can process and integrate various data types, including text, video, images, and audio, allowing seamless content conversion across formats.
