Chess Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman passed away while playing a game in the 12th round of the ongoing National Chess Championship on Friday evening.
Co-players said Ziaur fell on the floor while playing chess due to cardiac arrest.
He was rushed to Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital in the capital’s Shahbag while on duty doctor declared him dead on arrival.
Ziaur received the FIDE title of Grandmaster in 2002. He holds the highest FIDE rating ever achieved by a Bangladeshi chess player (2570 in October 2005).
In 2022, he made history by representing Bangladesh in the 44th Chess Olympiad with his son, Tahsin Tajwar Zia.
They were the first father-son duo to be on a national chess team.
