Russian President Vladimir Putin has presented over 70 animals from Moscow Zoo, including an African lion and brown bears, to Pyongyang Central Zoo in North Korea.
The move comes amid reports that over 10,000 North Korean troops have joined the Russian Army in its ongoing operations in Ukraine, particularly near the contested Kursk border region. Moscow has been striving to regain control of this area.
The animals, which also include white cockatoos, pheasants, and mandarin ducks, were transported by air under the supervision of Russian veterinarians. Russia’s Natural Resources Minister, Alexander Kozlov, officially handed them over to North Korean authorities. Russian officials described the gesture as an act of goodwill, continuing a pattern of animal exchanges between the two nations. Earlier this year, Moscow sent rare bird species to Pyongyang, while North Korean leader Kim Jong Un gifted Putin a pair of Pungsan dogs during his visit to Russia in June.
This collaboration highlights the strengthening ties between Russia and North Korea, with officials emphasizing enhanced cooperation in wildlife preservation.
“Animals have historically played an important role in international relations, serving as symbols of support, kindness and care,” Kozlov said during the handover, expressing confidence in North Korea’s ability to provide adequate facilities for the animals despite its economic challenges.
The partnership between the two nations extends beyond symbolic gestures. Following Putin’s visit to North Korea earlier this year, Moscow and Pyongyang have reportedly deepened their military and economic cooperation. In addition to sending troops, North Korea has allegedly supplied artillery, rocket launchers, and other lethal equipment to bolster Russia’s war efforts. In return, Russia is believed to be providing financial support and access to advanced military technologies, including missile systems and reconnaissance satellites, which could enhance Pyongyang’s intercontinental ballistic missile development and nuclear deterrence capabilities.
