An extra-large gold deposit with estimated reserves of more than 1,000 tons has been discovered in Hunan Province in Central China, Xinhua reported, citing the Hunan Provincial Geological Survey.
According to Chinese media, geologists have discovered more than 40 gold-bearing veins with reserves of 300 tons of gold at a depth of 2,000 meters under the Wangu deposit in Pingjiang County.
Gold reserves at the site, located at a depth of 3,000 meters, are estimated at more than 1,000 tons or 600 billion yuan (about $83 billion) in value.
“Many drilled rock cores showed visible gold,” said Chen Zhulin, an ore exploration expert, adding that a ton of ore at a depth of 2,000 meters contained a maximum of 138 grams of gold.
