Shuvosangho, a voluntary platform of Bashundhara Group, has conducted a mass campaign in Sherpur Upazila of Bogura, to raise awareness about the harmful environmental impacts of using plastic items and polythene bags.
The event took place at the conference room of Ulipur Ameria Samatullah Women’s Senior (Fazil) Madrasa, where participants were educated on the environmental dangers caused by plastic and polythene products.
Over 300 students and people from various professions attended the programme and pledged to avoid the use of harmful polythene and plastic products for the sake of a sound environment.
The campaign, aimed at raising awareness about the harmful effects of plastic use, was chaired by Abdul Hai Bari, president of the Shuvosangho upazila committee while the chief guest was former chairman of Sherpur Upazila Parishad, KM Mahbubur Rahman Harez.
In his speech, Harez praised Bashundhara Shuvosangho for its efforts to prevent the use of harmful plastics and polythene.
He also expressed his support to make the initiatives undertaken by the organisation in this regard successful.
Harez emphasised the need to create alternatives using jute products and highlighted the importance of public awareness in reducing plastic use.
Participants, including students and local community members, made a commitment to avoid using polythene.
During the campaign, Abdul Mannan, general secretary of Sherpur Press Club, urged people to carry jute bags when they go to the market instead of using plastic or polythene bags.
Student Fahmida Akter pointed out that plastic and polythene are often necessary in daily life, but alternatives must be developed to prevent further environmental damage.
If the use of plastics is not controlled, it will seriously harm the environment, as polythene does not decompose and can degrade soil fertility, she said.
The event was conducted by Abdul Kader Majnu, general secretary of Bashundhara Shuvosangho.
Other speakers included lecturers Shahjahan Ali and Zillur Rahman, of the madrasa, Ayub Ali, Sherpur correspondent for Daily Kaler Kantho, Rofiqul Islam, founder director of Sadhubari Saleha Public School and College and other members of Bashundhara Shuvosangho upazila committee, including Abdul Alim, Habibur Rahman Panna, Omar Faruk, Golam Rabbani and Golam Sarowar.
