The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed its shortlists for 10 Oscar categories, including documentary, international feature, original song, and score. Notable mentions include Selena Gomez’s song “Mi Camino” and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s score for “Challengers.”
The musicals "Emilia Pérez" and "Wicked" stood out in several categories. Netflix's drama "Emilia Pérez," about a transgender drug lord, made it to the shortlists for international feature, original score, sound, hair and makeup, and two original songs, "Mi Camino" and "El Mal," sung by Zoe Saldaña. On the other hand, "Wicked" was shortlisted for hair and makeup, sound, visual effects, and original score, but it wasn't eligible for original song due to the absence of new songs.
The semifinalists for best song include prominent artists such as Pharrell Williams with “Piece by Piece,” Elton John and Brandi Carlile for “Never Too Late,” Robbie Williams for “Forbidden Road,” and Lin-Manuel Miranda for “Tell Me It’s You” from “Mufasa: The Lion King.” Diane Warren, a 15-time nominee, may secure her 16th nod with her contribution to “The Six Triple Eight.”
Among the 15 documentaries shortlisted are titles like The Bibi Files, Frida, Union, and No Other Land. In the international feature category, notable entries include Brazil’s I’m Still Here, Canada’s Universal Language, Germany’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig, and Senegal’s Dahomey.
Below-the-line categories spotlighted films such as Deadpool & Wolverine and Alien: Romulus for sound and visual effects, while Dune: Part Two appeared in sound, visual effects, and makeup and hair. Hans Zimmer’s score for Dune was ineligible due to its reliance on music from the first film, though he received recognition for his work on Blitz. Other score semifinalists include Danny Elfman for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Kris Bowers for The Wild Robot.
The shortlists, determined by Academy members, will narrow to five nominees per category when final nominations are revealed on January 17. The 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will take place on March 2, broadcasting on ABC and Hulu.
