In 2024, a total of 310 students from educational institutions including Schools, Colleges, Madrasahs, and Universities committed suicide.
According to a data, some 61 percent of victims are women, while 38.4 percent of victims are men.
Achol Foundation shared the results of a survey titled “Student Suicides in 2024: Collective Efforts Necessary”.
According to the data shared by the foundation, among victims, the rate of adolescents aged 13 to 19 is the highest with some 65.7 percent of suicides committed in 2024.
Following the adolescent group, youth aged between 20 and 25 is the second highest vulnerable group with a 24 percent of total student suicides.
Again, about 7.4 percent of cases was committed by children aged between one and 12. The lowest number of suicides was committed by those aged 26 to 30. The rate of this age group was close to 2.9 percent.
Again, the tendency of suicide is higher among students at the secondary level. Last year, 46.1 percent of victims were from secondary level, 19.4 percent from the higher secondary level and 14.6 percent from undergraduate level. The alarming information is 7.4 percent of victims were primary level students.
Most of the cases, they commit suicide by hanging. In addition, people also commit suicide by poisoning themselves, jumping from the roof, drowning in water, being cut by a train, and taking sleeping pills.
Among the students who committed suicide last year, a significant number of students committed suicide due to pride. Many others commit suicide due to love relationships, unsatisfactory results, and mental health problems.
However, the survey says that last year, 49.4 percent of victims are school students and the suicide rate was highest in Dhaka division. A total of 29 percent of suicides reportedly occurred in Dhaka. Khulna and Chittagong divisions are next in terms of suicide. And Sylhet has the lowest suicide rate.
