A Dhaka court on Sunday issued an arrest warrant against star cricketer Shakib Al Hasan in a cheque manipulation case.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziadur Rahman issued the warrant against former Awami League lawmaker Shakib and two others.
On December 15 , Shahibur Rahman filed the case on behalf of IFIC Bank, accusing Shakib and three others of dishonouring a commitment to transfer Tk4.15 crore via two separate cheques.
Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm Ltd, owned by the cricket all-rounder, borrowed money at different times from IFIC Bank Banani branch. The concerned cheques were issued to repay some of the loans, the case statement read.
Others accused in the case are: Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm Ltd Managing Director Gazi Shahagir Hossain as well as Directors Imdadul Haq and Malaika Begum.
On December 18, the court ordered Shakib and four others to appear in court on January 18. On that day, Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm Director Imdadul Haq and Malaika Begum surrendered and granted bail.
However, Shakib Al Hasan and Agro Farm Managing Director Gazi Shahagir Hossain did not appear in court. For this reason, the court issued an arrest warrant against both of them.
In 2023, Shakib joined politics by enlisting for Awami League, and won the Magura-1 constituency in the one-sides January 7, 2024 elections on Awami League’s ticket.
His foray into politics marked the beginnings of his “fall from grace” before the public eye, and his silence over Awami League-led killings in July-August last year was his final undoing.
