Today marks the 123rd birth anniversary of legendary folk singer Abbasuddin Ahmed. The folk maestro Abbasuddin Ahmed was born in Cooch Behar district of India on 27 October 1901.
He was famous for Bhawaiya songs which are very popular in Bangladesh, particularly in the Rangpur region and Cooch Behar of India.
Abbasuddin earned fame during his school days through participation in musical soirees and cultural events. Brief tutelage from Ustad Jamiruddin Khan in Kolkata, and later from Ustad Kader Buksh in Murshidabad helped the folk maestro boost his gifted flair.
Vocal disciplines like Bhawaiya and Chatka from greater Rangpur and Cooch Behar were some of Abbasuddin’s specialties.
The iconic singer had equal capabilities in other types of songs in modern, patriotic and Islamic genres.
Folk genre songs such as Kaari, Saari, Bhatiyali, Murshidi, Bichchhedi, Marsiya, Dehatatya and Pala Gaan were also rendered by Abbasuddin with tremendous acclaim from fans.
Abbasuddin Ahmed passed away on 30 December 1959.
