Retired government secretary A.M.M. Nasir Uddin has been appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). President Md. Sahabuddin made the appointment under his constitutional authority. At the same time, he has also appointed four other Election Commissioners.
According to a notification issued by the cabinet division, four more election commissioners have also been appointed.
The four other Election Commissioners are: retired Additional Secretary Anwarul Islam Sarker, retired District and Sessions Judge Abdur Rahmanel Masud, retired Joint Secretary Begum Tahmida Ahmed, and retired Brigadier General Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah.
On October 29, the current interim government formed a 6-member search committee to recommend the new election commissioners. Led by Appellate Division Justice Zubair Rahman Chowdhury, the committee sent a list of 10 nominees to the president’s office.
Meanwhile, the previous commission, led by Kazi Habibul Awal, appointed during the Awami League government on February 27, 2022, collectively resigned on September 5. Since then, the Election Commission has been vacant for nearly three and a half months.
