Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has taken the initiative to repair the road in front of late President and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s plot in the capital’s Dakshin Khan after publishing a report on Bangladesh Pratidin about the negligence of the DNCC.
The DNCC authority said they would start the repair work very soon.
Residents of Chalaban recently submitted a letter to the DNCC administrator asking for the repair of the road in front of Ziaur Rahman’s plot. In the letter, locals alleged that the roads in the Chalaban area had been neglected for a long time.
On October 27, Bangladesh Pratidin published a report titled ‘Atiqul refused to develop road due to presence of Zia's plot’. The report has drawn the attention of the DNCC. Giving importance the DNCC administrator has given instructions to repair the road.
DNCC Chief Engineer Brig Gen Md Moin Uddin told Bangladesh Pratidin that the condition of the 18 roads under DNCC is terrible. The city corporation’s project is underway. Work of all under-construction roads will be completed by next month. DNCC has already taken the initiative to repair the road in the Chalaban area after publishing the report. DNCC region-7 executive engineer has been given the charge of the matter.
Dhaka North City Corporation (Zone-7) Executive Engineer Ishtiaque Mahmud said, “All roads of the ‘Army Society’ including in front of former President Ziaur Rahman’s plot in Chalaban are being surveyed. After the survey, we will inform the DNCC about the total cost of the repair works. This has been included in our priority tasks. Hope we can start repairing works of the roads very soon.”
Former President Ziaur Rahman, former army officer General (Rtd.) Mustafizur Rahman, Brig Gen (Rtd.) Abul Hasanat Abdullah and other army officers bought plots in the Chalaban area known as the ‘Chalaban Armir Tek’ or ‘Army Society’. Although other army officers sold their plots later, the former Prime Minister and wife of Ziaur Rahman didn’t sell the plot.
Atiqul Islam, former mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation refused to repair the road there just because Zaiur Rahman had a plot in the ‘Army Society’.
In 2018, 18 unions including Dakshin Khan and Uttar Khan have been included in the DNCC. Since then, development projects of Tk 25, 000 crores are underway in full swing in these areas. However, former mayor Atiqul stopped the drainage and road carpeting works in the ‘Army Society’ only for having a plot there owned by Ziaur Rahman.
