Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has made history as the first South Asian international artist to publicly endorse a US presidential candidate by supporting Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign.
His endorsement included a 30-minute virtual concert organized in partnership with the Asian-American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) Victory Fund, a group focused on engaging AAPI voters and supporting Democratic candidates, reports Daily Star.
Kamala Harris, the current vice president, would make history as the first woman and the first Black woman to serve as president of the United States. With her Indian and Jamaican heritage, she has gained significant support from the South Asian community, and Rahman's endorsement amplifies her message.
The virtual concert, streamed on October 13 via the AAPI Victory Fund's YouTube channel and various South Asian media outlets, featured some of Rahman's popular songs, including "Singapenne." During the concert, messages were shared about Harris's historic candidacy and her dedication to the AAPI community.
Shekar Narasimhan, chairperson of the AAPI Victory Fund, applauded Rahman's participation, remarking, "With this performance, AR Rahman has united with a number of leaders and artists championing progress and representation in America. This event goes beyond music; it serves as a call to action for our communities to engage and vote for the future we envision."
Prior to the event, a teaser with Rahman and Indiaspora Founder MR Rangaswami provided a glimpse into their concert preparations. Social media was abuzz with admiration for Rahman's backing of Harris, with numerous users highlighting the significance of his position against hate and division.
One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, "Thank you @arrahman for letting your voice be heard. Artists of your repute must speak out against fascism and racism. Together, we can give Kamala Harris the mandate she deserves."
Rahman's support, as a global music icon, is expected to energize the Asian-American community before the November 5 general election, particularly in states with large Indian populations like California, Texas, New Jersey, and New York. His endorsement may help mobilize South Asian voters, with many seeing his performance as a major boost for Harris's campaign against Republican candidate Donald Trump.
