Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has remarked that no one should be harassed for exercising freedom of speech.
He made this statement on Monday morning at an event at Moghbazar, organized to mark the golden jubilee of Daily Sangram's publication.
"During the rule of the fascist government, many were deprived of their freedom of expression. The truth was not revealed under the fascist regime, and traces of that still remain in certain aspects. However, Jamaat will now stand beside persecuted journalists."
He further stated, "The Awami League redefined the term 'Shaheed(martyr).' Only those they labeled Shaheed (martyrs) were recognized as 'real' Shaheeds (martyrs). They unleashed havoc on the media. If journalists had fulfilled their role as the mirror and conscience of the nation, the fascist regime would not have been able to tighten its grip on the people in this manner."
Shafiqur Rahman emphasized that journalism must call a spade a spade. There should be no personal opinions from journalists inserted into the news, nor should there be any omission of truth.
According to Jamaat Ameer, this founding principle (of calling a spade a spade) was completely disregarded during the fascist era.
