Summer means beach days, but while the cool sea water offers relief from the heat, it can harm your hair. Chlorinated saltwater can leave hair dry, brittle, and prone to damage.
Indian dermatologist Dr. BL Jangid offers some expert tips to protect your hair this season.
Wear a shower cap
A shower cap is a simple yet effective way to protect your hair. Before swimming, apply a moisturizing lotion to your hair to reduce the drying effects of salt or chlorine, then wear the cap to minimize exposure.
Apply oil before swimming
Use coconut oil or a lightweight hair oil before dipping in the sea. The oil creates a barrier that prevents chlorine or salt from penetrating your hair and scalp.
Rinse hair before swimming
Wet your hair with freshwater before jumping in. Hair is porous, and this reduces the amount of chlorinated or salty water it absorbs. After swimming, make sure to shower and shampoo immediately to remove buildup.
Choose the right shampoo and conditioner
Use a clarifying or chlorine-neutralizing shampoo if you swim often. This helps remove chlorine and salt buildup. Follow up with a protein-rich conditioner to keep hair smooth and hydrated. Avoid letting salt or chlorine-drenched hair dry without washing.
Limit sun and heat exposure
Excessive sun exposure not only damages your skin but also intensifies the damaging effects of chlorine on your hair. Protect your hair with a hat or scarf, and minimize the use of heat styling tools like hair dryers or straighteners.
Know your risk
If you have thin, colored, or chemically-treated hair, you’re more vulnerable to damage from chlorine and saltwater. Seek professional help if you experience scalp or hair loss issues.
With these precautions, you can enjoy your summer activities without compromising your hair health.
