Twenty-eight sacks of money have been recovered from the donation boxes of the Pagla Mosque in Kishoreganj after they were opened on Saturday morning. The counting is currently in progress.
The donation boxes were opened around 7 am under the supervision of Additional District Magistrate and head of the donation box opening committee, Jesmin Akhter, in the presence of District Commissioner (DC) Fouzia Khan and Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Hasan Chowdhury.
The historic mosque, located in the district town, has 10 donation boxes and one trunk, which are usually opened every three months. This time, however, they were opened after four months and eleven days.
Confirming the development, DC Fauzia Khan, who is also the president of the Pagla Mosque management committee, said the 10 donation boxes and one trunk were opened in the presence of committee members. A total of 28 sacks of money were found. The exact amount will be known after the counting is complete.
SP Mohammad Hasan Chowdhury stated that the donation boxes were opened under strict security. Police will remain on duty until the money is counted and transferred to the bank.
The counting process involves district administration staff, 285 madrasa students, 50 bank employees, 34 members of the mosque committee, and 10 members of the law enforcement agencies.
As the counting began, a large number of curious onlookers gathered around the mosque, some having travelled from distant areas.
Previously, on the morning of November 30, 2024, 11 donation boxes of the mosque were opened, revealing 29 sacks of money. After counting, the total amount stood at Tk 8,21,34,304.
In addition, foreign currencies, gold, and silver were also found. That had been a record amount collected over a period of three months and thirteen days.
People from various districts regularly donate not only cash, but also ducks, chickens, cows, goats, and other items to the mosque.
Pagla Mosque was built on nearly 10 decimals of land along the Narsunda River in the Harua area of the district town. Following its expansion, the mosque now covers three acres and 88 decimals of land.
