Two motifs created for the Bangla New Year’s procession at the Faculty of Fine Arts (Charukola), University of Dhaka, were damaged in a fire early Saturday. Among them were the “Face of Fascism” and the “Dove of Peace.”
The fire broke out at the site where the motifs were being constructed. The "Face of Fascism" was completely destroyed, while the "Dove of Peace" sustained partial damage.
The incident was observed firsthand on Saturday morning at the faculty premises.
According to Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed, the fire is believed to have occurred between 4:45 am and 5:00 am, during a brief absence of the on-duty mobile security team, who had gone to perform Fajr (dawn) prayers. This suggests the fire may have been set during that time window.
Professor Azharul Islam, dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, confirmed that the fire took place in the early morning and acknowledged the damage to both motifs.
Dhaka University Assistant Proctor Rafiqul Islam said that shortly after the incident, the university’s vice-chancellor, proctor, and police officials arrived at the scene. CCTV footage is being reviewed to determine how the incident occurred.
Many students have alleged that the burning of the fascist Sheikh Hasina motif was part of a conspiracy. They have demanded a proper investigation and appropriate action against those responsible.
