Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, Professor Ali Riaz, announced on Monday that the Commission expects to build nationwide consensus on its reform agenda by mid-July, reports UNB.
Speaking during a meeting with the AB Party at the Jatiya Sangsad Complex, Prof Riaz said, “The Commission’s target is to complete our responsibilities within the stipulated timeframe of mid-July.”
The AB Party delegation was led by Chairman Mujibur Rahman Manju. During the session, Prof Riaz noted that 29 political parties have so far submitted feedback on the Commission’s reform recommendations.
“We hope to conclude the first round of talks with political parties and alliances by the first week of May,” he said, adding that the second phase of dialogues would begin in the second week of May. He acknowledged that differing views and calls for clarification on several recommendations are expected as part of the process.
Beyond political parties, the Commission also intends to engage the general public for their input on the proposed reforms.
AB Party Chairman Mujibur Rahman Manju stated that his party agrees with 108 out of the 166 reform proposals submitted by the Commission. The party expressed partial agreement on 26 others, while disagreeing with 32.
The reform proposals under discussion are drawn from five previous commissions: the Constitution Reform Commission, the Public Administration Reform Commission, the Electoral System Reform Commission, the Judiciary Reform Commission, and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Reform Commission.
To facilitate consultation, the Commission earlier shared the reform proposals in spreadsheet format with 38 political parties, asking for their written feedback by March 13.
The ongoing discussions are part of the Commission’s broader effort to foster inclusive governance through structured consensus on vital national reforms.
