The cold wave in Panchagarh, a district located near the Himalayas, is intensifying. On Friday, temperatures in the region dropped to 11°C, with residents of Tetulia braving the biting chill.
At 6 am on Friday, the temperature was recorded at 11.4°C, signaling a further drop in the area's winter conditions.
Russell Shah, officer in charge of the Tetulia weather station, confirmed the report.
He said that while the temperature had remained stable for the past four days in Tetulia, it dropped further today to 11°C. In recent days, the temperature had been fluctuating around 12°C, but today it saw a decline."
He further stated that although winter typically arrives in December, January, and February, it begins earlier in Panchagarh, and due to the district's location at the foothills of the Himalayas, the cold is more intense here.
Locals report that as soon as the sun sets, the severe cold sets in. Even though sunlight pierces through the dense fog, the biting cold is still felt.
The cold weather has led to an increase in cold-related illnesses.
At Panchagarh Adhunik Sadar Hospital, and other health centers, children and the elderly are seeking treatment for colds, coughs, pneumonia, and diarrhea. The number of patients is steadily rising each day.
Monowarul Islam, a pediatrician at Panchagarh Adhunik Sadar Hospital, informed the media that due to a lack of space, children are being made to lie on the floor. He also mentioned that a special medical team has been formed to strengthen the healthcare services.
