The European Union (EU) and BRAC officially launched the SHIKHA project on Thursday, an initiative aimed at tackling gender-based violence in society.
Recent studies indicate that 80% of women in garment factories, 74% of female students in educational institutions, 94% of women using public transport, and 68% of women on online platforms in Bangladesh have experienced some form of violence or harassment.
In response to this pressing issue, the EU and BRAC inaugurated the SHIKHA project at an inception event held at a city hotel.
The project seeks to create safer public and private spaces by strengthening prevention and response mechanisms against gender-based violence, bullying, and sexual harassment. Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the EU to Bangladesh Charles Whiteley attended the event as the chief guest.
Also present were Omar Md Imrul Mohsin, inspector general (additional secretary) of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE); Shams Mahmud, member of the Support Committee, BGMEA and managing director of Shasha Denim Limited.
