A devastating fire early Friday morning gutted most of the shops at Shewrapara Kitchen Market in Dhaka, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD), reports UNB.
Rakibul Hasan, duty officer at the FSCD headquarters, reported that the fire started at a shop near Shewrapara Metro Station on Begum Rokeya Sarani. Firefighters received the call around 2:42 am and three firefighting units were dispatched immediately. Five additional units later joined the effort.
The fire was brought under control within 45 minutes, and it was completely extinguished by 5:50 am. The cause of the fire and the extent of damages are still under investigation.
Traders reported significant losses, with most shops destroyed by the blaze. Harunur Rashid, a local resident, shared that he and his family were awakened by smoke filling their bedroom at midnight. "When we stepped outside, we saw the fire raging through the market," he said. Some shops located under a six-storey building were also affected.
