The Foreign Ministry of Japan on Sunday dispatched a survey team made up of officials from the Japan International Cooperation Agency and medical experts to assess damage in Myanmar, following a massive earthquake that struck the center of the country, reports JN.
The team will help to examine whether a Japan Disaster Relief team should be sent to the country.
Myanmar has been hit by more powerful aftershocks, hindering rescue efforts for those still missing after Friday’s magnitude 7.7 earthquake.
Some 1,700 people have now been confirmed dead, but there are fears the death toll could be significantly higher.
At least 3,400 people have been injured and many others are still missing.
