Greenland’s newly elected Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has called for national unity and a firm rejection of U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed claims over the island. Nielsen emphasized that the future of Greenland belongs solely to its people, stressing that Washington will never take control of the Arctic territory, reports RT.
Trump reignited his interest in Greenland over the weekend, stating in an NBC News interview that the United States would “100% get” the island. He suggested there was a “good possibility” of acquiring it without military force but noted that nothing was off the table.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, Nielsen urged a measured but strong response to the growing U.S. pressure. “We must not act out of fear. We must respond with peace, dignity, and unity,” he wrote.
Nielsen made it clear: “President Trump says the United States is ‘getting Greenland.’ Let me make this clear: The U.S. is not getting that.” He added, “We do not belong to anyone else. We determine our own future.”
Nielsen, leader of the Demokraatit party, was elected earlier this month in a surprise victory. His platform focused on safeguarding Greenland’s autonomy, reducing dependence on Denmark, and attracting international investment while maintaining control over local resources.
Tensions escalated following a visit by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and his wife to Greenland last week. At Thule Air Base, Vance criticized Denmark’s management of the island, claiming that it would be “a lot better” under U.S. protection.
Trump first floated the idea of acquiring Greenland in 2019 and has revisited the proposal since returning to office. His administration views the island as a strategic asset, citing its geographic location and potential natural resources.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin, discussing Moscow’s Arctic strategy last week, warned that U.S. annexation ambitions for Greenland—dating back to the 1860s—should not be dismissed as mere “extravagant talk.”
