Wadifa Ahmed has become the champion in women's category of the Asian Zonal Chess Championship in Sri Lankan capital Colombo. Along with this, the 10th grade Bangladeshi student has received two big good news.
Wadifa has earned the honor of becoming an International Women's Master from a FIDE Master by winning the championship in Colombo on Tuesday. Along with this, she has also received a ticket to play in the Women's World Cup starting on July 5.
A rating of 2200 and three norms are required to become a Women's International Master. However, if a FIDE Master becomes a champion in the Asian Zonal or World Cup qualifiers, then the title of Women's International Master is directly obtained. Then there is no condition to fulfill the norm, and the rating is reduced from 2200 to 2000. Wadifa's rating is now 2091, she has become IM directly now.
Before Wadifa, three other Bangladeshi women have become International Masters. Wadifa got the opportunity to sit next to the first of those three, Rani Hamid, by drawing with her on Tuesday. The other two WIM’s are Shamima Sultana and Shirin Sultana.
