A total of 289 leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) have been temporarily suspended from Jahangirnagar University (JU) in connection with the attack on students during the anti-discrimination student movement and the subsequent public uprising. Additionally, nine teachers have been temporarily dismissed from their jobs for allegedly supporting the attack.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan confirmed the information following a syndicate meeting held at 3 am on Tuesday. Earlier, the meeting began at 11 am on Monday at the council room of the new administrative building.
Professor Ahsan stated, "In connection with the attack on JU students during the anti-discrimination movement, 289 Chhatra League leaders and activists have been temporarily suspended from the university. Furthermore, a probe committee has been formed. Among the suspended activists, those who have already graduated will have their certificates withheld, while the results of those who have completed exams or viva voce will be suspended. Regular students involved will face temporary suspension."
He also mentioned that nine teachers have been temporarily dismissed on charges of involvement in the Chhatra League and police attacks during the movement. Preliminary investigations have revealed allegations against several more teachers, and a structured committee has been formed to collect detailed evidence.
Meanwhile, former vice-chancellor professor Md. Nurul Alam and registrar Abu Hasan, who were accused in the attack, have already retired. As a result, a decision has been made to revoke their pension benefits.
Meanwhile, in response to student demands, the university has decided to rename several establishments that were previously named after members of the Sheikh family. Accordingly, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, Sheikh Russell Hall, and Sheikh Hasina Hall will be renamed. Additionally, the night of July 15 at JU has been declared as the “Kalo Raat (Night of Darkness)”.
