Fahamedul Islam, the Bangladeshi-origin Italian footballer, returned to Italy without coming to Dhaka after training with the Bangladesh national football team in Taif, Saudi Arabia.
The men in red and green landed in Dhaka at 9:30 am (BST) without Fahamedul. Team manager Amer Khan confirmed that the 18-year-old, who was part of Javier Cabrera’s 30-member preliminary squad, did not secure a spot in the final 23-member team.
Fahamedul, born in Feni and now playing as a left-back for Italian Serie D club Olbia Calcio 1905, was among four debutants who impressed the head coach during the selection process. The others were English club Sheffield United’s midfielder Hamza Choudhury, Mohammedan Sporting Club’s midfielder Arif Hossain, and Police Football Club’s forward Al Amin.
Bangladesh is gearing up to face India in the first leg of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers’ final round on March 25 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong.
