Opener Virat Kohli scored brilliant 76 runs off 59 balls while middle-order batter Axar Patel smashed 47 runs from 31 balls and Shivam Dube 27 runs off 16 balls.
This is the first fifty of Virat Kohli in this world Cup.
South African bowler Keshav Maharaj and Anrich Nortje bagged two wickets each while Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen got one wicket each.
Earlier, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first.
