Plastic and polythene, harmful to the environment, have become a significant part of people’s daily lives.
Due to a lack of awareness, the use of plastic and polythene continues to increase in the purchase of vegetables, fish and other essential items elsewhere in the country.
In cities, ports and villages, the use of environment-friendly bags has decreased, leading to a growing dependency on polythene, which is now posing a threat to biodiversity as well.
To address the pollution, Bashundhara Shuvosangho Birganj Upazila branch in Dinajpur has taken special initiatives to raise awareness among people in indigenous communities.
On Saturday morning, a courtyard meeting was organised in Makdrai village of Ward No. nine in the municipal town.
During the meeting, Shuvosangho friends highlighted the harmful effects of plastic and polythene and emphasised the need for alternative solutions.
Forhad Hossain, president of Birganj Bashundhara Shuvosangho unit said, “Plastic and polythene are non-biodegradable goods, which have adverse effects on both the environment and human health.
Specifically, when plastic or polythene accumulates on farmland, it hampers the fertility of the soil. Therefore, people should avoid using plastic and polythene as much as possible, he said.
Sohail Ahmed, advisor of Birganj Bashundhara Shuvosangho unit, its Joint General Secretaries Sabbir Hossain and Tanvir Hossain, Masud Rana and and Kaler Kantho Birganj Upazila correspondent, among others, attended the programme.
