After a gap of 16 years, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has decided to celebrate Pohela Boishakh, the first day of the Bengali New Year, on a large scale. The celebrations will take place in a fascism-free environment and include a series of events to highlight Bangladesh's national culture. The celebrations will include Boishakhi processions, rallies, cultural programs, and fairs, taking place in metropolitan cities, districts, and upazilas across the country.
This decision was made during a meeting of the BNP's national standing committee, held at the party’s political office in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Monday night. Kazi Saiyedul Alam Babul, BNP’s Dhaka Divisional Organizing Secretary, shared details of the party's plans for the celebrations. The program will include Boishakhi processions and rallies in various districts and upazilas, and if feasible, the rallies may also be organized at the union level. Additionally, there will be various cultural activities such as Panta arrangements, folk song performances, the Baisakhi Grameen Mela, and Kabaddi (traditional games) on the day.
However, due to the upcoming SSC exams on April 15, the party has instructed that all activities be completed before the evening of Pohela Boishakh. Various events will continue the following evening, April 15, and into April 16, when there are no exams scheduled.
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, who presided over the meeting virtually from London, addressed political issues, including the current situation in the country. This meeting marked the first gathering of the party’s top policymakers after Eid-ul-Fitr.
The standing committee meeting was attended by senior BNP leaders, including Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar, Mirza Abbas, Babu Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan (online), Nazrul Islam Khan, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir (online), Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salahuddin Ahmed, Begum Selima Rahman, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku (online), Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, and Professor Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain (online).
