Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has blamed the students of Government Titumir College for plunging the government as well as the city dwellers into a miserable situation.
“Everyone knows who is provoking them,” the home adviser made the allegation while talking to reporters at his ministry office in Dhaka on Monday.
Alam also turned down the students’ demand to recognise the college as a separate university and blamed them for plunging both the city dwellers and the government into a miserable situation.
Venting his anger upon the agitating students, Alam said that his government initially felt that the demand was not reasonable.
“What can we do? We have left the matter to the people, and they will drive the students out of the streets,” he said.
About the government’s stance on the demand, the home adviser said that the authorities would undertake steps based on a report of the specialised committee.
Calling upon the students to continue the movement inside the college campus without disrupting the public lives, he said that a small number of students are involved in the agitation, while the majority wishes to focus on their studies at the college.
Earlier in the day, the authorities deployed Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members to take the possible volatile situation created by the agitating students of Titumir college in Mohakhali area of Dhaka.
A total of four platoons of BGB members were deployed in and around the area this afternoon to prevent any untoward situation related to the blockade programme.
The agitating students of the college blocked Mohakhali level cross to meet their demand for recognition of the educational institution as an independent university.
Prior to this, they also blocked Mohakhali-Gilshan road to meet their demand.
