A healthy gut could be the secret to clear skin, says Dr. Karan Rajan, an NHS surgeon from India and a YouTuber. Instead of relying on expensive skincare routines, he emphasizes improving gut health to prevent skin issues.
How gut health affects the skin
Dr. Rajan explains the gut-skin axis, where gut health influences skin conditions through the microbiome and immune system. Food allergies often first appear as rashes or swelling, and many gut-related diseases manifest on the skin.
Conditions like celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) have clear dermatological symptoms. Interestingly, treating SIBO with antibiotics that alter gut bacteria can also improve rosacea.
Studies also show that children with eczema tend to have lower gut microbiome diversity, suggesting a disrupted gut can lead to skin inflammation.
The brain-gut-skin axis
Dr. Rajan highlights the brain-gut-skin connection, where mental stress and gut disorders like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can trigger skin flare-ups, including acne and eczema. Factors like diet, sleep, exercise, and environment all contribute to skin health.
By maintaining a balanced gut microbiome, one can potentially reduce inflammation, prevent breakouts, and achieve healthier skin.
