Two district judges have joined the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal under the Department of Internal Resources as members after almost 12 years, UNB reports.
The appointed judges are -- Mohammad Samshul Haque and Mohammad Anisur Rahman.
Although there is a provision to appoint working and retired tax commissioners, district judges, chartered accountants, cost and management accountants, advocates and tax lawyers as members of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, for a long time only working tax commissioners have been performing this duty.
Taxpayers have been demanding for a long time to appoint professionals from outside the tax cadre as members of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal as per the Income Tax Act.
After the financial year 2013-2014, no judicial officer has been appointed to the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal. After almost 12 years, they were again appointed in this position.
According to an NBR release, the functioning of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal will be more dynamic, the confidence of the taxpayers in the Income Tax Department will increase and it will contribute positively to the revenue collection of the country through these appointments.
