The government is considering deploying retired traffic policemen to control traffic congestion. In this regard, Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) said, "We have already used students to improve traffic jam situation on the roads. Similarly, a community policing scheme has been planned to utilize the retired traffic policemen. It will be implemented very soon."
He told this to the reporters after the meeting of the Law and Order Advisory Committee at the Secretariat on Sunday.
The advisor said that the Chief Advisor, former Inspector General of Special Government Police (IGP) Mohammad Khoda Baksh Chowdhury, the new IGP and DMP Commissioner were welcomed in today's meeting. The meeting discussed the 8-point demand raised by the Sanatan Jagrani Alliance, along with various topics like Biswa Ijtema, the High Court's directive to ban auto-rickshaws on the roads, the celebration of Victory Day, the arrest of miscreants, fake cases, legal harassment, drugs, and road traffic.
In response to the question of why former traffic members are being laid off, he said, "There should be 25 percent of roads in the city. But we have seven and a half percent. The number of cars on the roads is increasing day by day. This road cannot accommodate so many cars. Again, roads on various locations are being blocked and protests are being held in the consequence of it. As a result, traffic congestion is increasing. We’ve seen community policing has worked before. We are trying to bring them back in a new form."
In response to the question of when this community policing will start, he said, "Even if we want it, it cannot start right now as we’ve to go through a recruitment process. However, the activities will start soon."
