Seven officials and employees of Mymensingh Palli Bidyut Samiti-2 have been temporarily suspended following the electrocution incident that led to the death and injury of three IUT students in Shreepur, Gazipur.
The incident took place when the IUT picnic bus was electrocuted.
Mymensingh Palli Bidyut Samiti-2's General Manager (GM), Md. Akmal Hossain, confirmed this on Saturday night (Nov 23).
He said that on Saturday (Nov23) morning three students from the Islamic University of Technology (IUT) were electrocuted while traveling in a picnic bus in Gazipur.
Following the incident, senior officials from the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board visited the site.
Later that night, the authorities suspended Deputy General Manager (DGM, Technical) of Mymensingh Palli Bidyut Samiti-2, Kamalesh Chandra Barman, Deputy General Manager (DGM) of Mawna Zonal Office, Khandokar Mahmudul Hasan, AGM Md. Tanveer Salahuddin, Junior Engineer Matiur Rahman, and linemen Parvez Mia, Shakhawat Hossain, and Abul Kashem.
On Saturday (Nov 23) morning, around 460 IUT students from Mechanical Engineering Department set off for Matir Maya Eco Resort in Telihati Union, by double-decker buses operated by BRTC. The convoy included six double-decker buses and three microbuses. Upon reaching Udakhali Bazar on the rural road, one of the BRTC double-decker buses made contact with a low-hanging power line. The bus was carrying approximately 60-70 passengers at the time.
Several students were electrocuted and injured in the incident. They were rescued and taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared three students dead.
The deceased were identified as Mozammel Hossain Naeem (24), Mostakim Rahman Mahin (22), and Jobayer Alam Sakib (22). Three others were seriously injured.
In response, a three-member investigation committee has been formed by the Gazipur District Administration, and a five-member committee has been formed by the university.
