Newly-appointed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Md Nasir Uddin said they want to gift the nation a free, fair and acceptable election.
“Our aim is clear. We want to give a free, fair and acceptable election to the countrymen. We will do everything to hold a fair election. However, the election schedule will not be announced right now. It will be announced after necessary reformations,” he said.
The CEC made the remarks immediately after taking oath on Sunday (November 24) afternoon.
In response to another question, the newly appointed CEC said, “We have the capacity to face all kinds of challenges. I have faced various challenges during my job as secretary at the Ministry of Information and the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.”
Earlier in the day, AMM Nasir Uddin and four other election commissioners (ECs) were sworn in.
Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed administered the oath to the CEC and the four commissioners at the Supreme Court's Judges’ Lounge around 1:30 pm.
The four election commissioners are -- former additional secretary Anwarul Islam Sarker, retired district and sessions judge Abdur Rahmanel Masud, former joint secretary Tahmida Ahmed and brigadier general (Rtd.) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah.
Supreme Court Registrar General Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan conducted the swearing-in ceremony.
On November 21, the cabinet division issued separate gazette notifications on their appointments as per the order from President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
