US President Joe Biden on Tuesday offered his country's full support to Nobel laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus-led interim government of Bangladesh, UNB, BSS reported.
Biden said this during his bilateral meeting with Yunus on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
During the meeting, Yunus apprised him about how the students rose against the tyranny of the previous government and gave their lives to create the opportunity to rebuild Bangladesh.
Yunus stressed that his government must succeed in rebuilding the country and would need US cooperation.
In response, Biden said if the students could sacrifice so much for their country, they (US) too should do more.
Prof Yunus gifted Biden a copy of the The Art of Triumph, a book on the graffiti drawn by the students and youth during the revolution.
According to the Chief Adviser's Office, the meeting began at the UN headquarters at 11:00 am (NY time), which is the first meeting of the Bangladesh interim government chief with the US President.
This is an important day. It is very rare (to see such a meeting) at the UNGA," Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said.
He said Bangladesh in any case maintains very good relations with the US and with this meeting the relationship will reach a new level.
"It's a good news that the US stands beside Bangladesh in this period of transition," Shafiqul added.
This is the first time in the history of Bangladesh that a US President has met the head of the Bangladesh government on the sidelines UNGA.
