Interim government has formed a five-member investigation commission to locate and identify the people who were victims of the enforced disappearance during the last 16 years of rule of the ousted Awami League government.
The commission has been formed headed by former High Court Division Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury, the Cabinet Division issued a notification for the formation of the commission on Tuesday.
Former Justice of the High Court Division Md Farid Ahmed Shibli, human rights activists Nur Khan and Sazzad Hossain, and Nabila Idris, a teacher of BRAC University have been made members of the commission, Daily Sun reports.
The probe body was formed in light of the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1956 to locate the people who were victims of the enforced disappearance by the members of different law enforcement agencies, including police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Special Branch (SB), Ansar Battalion, National Intelligence Agency (NSI), Defense Forces, Directorate General of Defense Intelligence (DGFI) and the members of the Coast Guard, read the gazette.
The commission has been asked to locate and identify the people who were victims of the enforced disappearance from January 1, 2010 to August 5, 2024 by the members of these law enforcing agencies.
It is required to submit detailed reports on cases of enforced disappearances to the relevant authorities, along with recommendations within 45 working days.
Additionally, the commission has been directed to inform the relatives of those who have been forcibly disappeared and to gather information about investigations conducted by other agencies or institutions regarding these cases.
