Shabagh movement, that took place as the consequence over the verdict of war-criminal of 1971 Abdul Quader Mollah on February 5, 2013, is reaching its 10th anniversary on Sunday.
On this day of 2013, some youth bloggers and online activists began to protest against the verdict of Jamat-e-Islami leader Quader Mollah as they were infuriated of his not getting the capital punishment for his crime against humanity in 1971. The International Crimes Tribunal gave Quader Mollah life imprisonment over his crimes in 1971 including killing civilian people.
The protesters gathered at Shahbagh Square in the evening and began to deliver fierce slogans demanding his capital punishment. This gathering turned into mass protestation in Shahbagh area and across the country within no time.
Later on, the government has amended the laws by providing scope for the state to appeal against the verdict of the International Crime Tribunals, which was absent before.
The state appealed against the verdict of Quader Mollah and he was sentenced to death.
On December 12, 2013, he was hung to death. After that, when Awami League came to power for second consecutive time, some other were also hung as they were proved guilty of war crime by ICT.
