Bashundhara Group, the country’s largest business conglomerate, has ridded 13,000 destitute in the northern region of pinching cold in various districts of the northern region this winter.

As part of longstanding humanitarian gesture, the largest corporate house distributed blankets among cold-hit poor in several days.

Shuvosangho, a social organisation of Bashundhara Group’s vernacular daily Kaler Kantho, executed the blanket distribution programme.

The districts where blankets were distributed include Chapainawabganj, Joypurhat, Dinajpur, Naogaon, Rajshahi, Panchagarh, Nilphamari and Thakurgaon.

Chapainawabganj

Ayesha Begum, aged 80 years, is a war heroine (Birangana) in the district.  The woman who made significant sacrifice during the Liberation War in 1971 was suffering a lot amid the bitter cold.

Bashundhara Group distributed blankets among the 14 other war heroes and other helpless people of Chapainawabganj.

Dinajpur

Under the leadership of Shuvosangho director Jakaria Zaman, the members of the social organisation reached Dinajpur on January 16 and started distributing blankets from the next day.

Nearly 300 poor and destitute received blankets in the district in two days. Sources said 1,500 people in seven places of six upazilas of Dinajpur district received blankets on January 17 alone.

Hailing from Suihari area of Dinajpur city, Shahjahan said he is happy to get long-cherished blanket from Bashundhara amid shivering cold.

“I sell mirrors and combs in front of Chehelgazi School. It is hard for me to earn food for my family members, let alone buying blankets. However, I received blankets from the Bashundhara Group. No more tension,” he said.

Joypurhat

Bashundhara Group distributed blankets in Joypurhat from January 18 on. One thousand blankets were distributed in separate arrangements in Joypurhat sadar, Panchbibi, Kalai, Khetlal and Akkelpur upazilas. Receiving the blankets, recipients prayed for Chairman of the Bashundhara Group. Some 400 poor people got blankets at Joypurhat collectorate ground.

Joypurhat Deputy Commissioner Salehin Tanvir Ghazi inaugurated the blanket distribution programme at the collectorate ground and hailed noble initiative of the largest corporate house.

Naogaon

Blankets were distributed among cold-hit students of Barunkandi Hafezia Qawmi Madrasa in Digha union in Naogaon. President of Naogaon Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mohammad Iqbal Shahriar Russell was present in the event.

Rajshahi

Bashundhara Group spread warmth among the cold beaten destitute in various upazilas in Rajshahi. The blankets were of great help to the people, specially of the neighborhood of the Padma bank.

Panchagarh

The largest business conglomerate distributed blankets among helpless people and brought smile to their faces.

Blanket distribution took place at Bir Muktijoddha Sirajul Islam Stadium, BM College, Ekush Smriti library premises and other venues.

Nilphamari

One thousand blankets were distributed in the entire district in the last couple of days and the recipients including elderly people, widows and physically challenged expressed happiness and prayed for owner of the Bashundhara Group.

Thakurgaon

Around 1,000 people in the district got blankets from the largest corporate house of the country and expressed their sigh of relief. They said no organisation except Bashundhara Group came forward to protect them from pinching cold.

Besides, blankets were distributed among 1,000 people in Narayanganj.

Jakaria Zaman, director of Shuvosangho said, "As per instructions of the Hon’ble Chairman of Bashundhara Group, we have distributed 13,000 blankets in nine districts of the northern districts.”
