Members of Detective Branch of Cox's Bazar District Police rescued two bear cubs of endangered species from Chakaria upazila of the district, reports BSS.
Superintendent of Cox's Bazar Police Md Mahfuzul Islam said this at a press conference on Saturday afternoon.
Being informed, a team of the police conducted a raid in Digar Pankhali area of Chakaria municipality around 9:30pm on Friday night and rescued the two cubs from a house of Deepak Das, 32, son of late Sonaram Das of the area, he said.
The police team also arrested Deepak, a member of an international trafficking ring who captured the cubs to smuggle abroad, in this connection, the SP said, adding: "The cubs are approximately two months old and weigh over a kilogram each."
Mahfuzul Islam said police conducted the operation on the basis of information obtained from traffickers arrested from different places of the country.
A case was filed with Chakaria Police Station under the relevant law in this connection, he added.
