Retinol is a popular anti-aging ingredient, often recommended by age 25. While it promises youthful skin, it can trigger breakouts, irritation, and the dreaded "retinol purge," lasting weeks to months. Using it without expert guidance may worsen sensitive or acne-prone skin.
The solution? Introduce retinol gradually—both topically and internally. Yoga and wellness influencer Florentia Dimitrelou suggests a retinol-rich wellness shot to help your body adjust. While it won’t replace topical retinol, it can support skin renewal from within. Always consult a dermatologist before incorporating retinol into your routine.
Morning retinol shots
Ingredients: Some 500ml of coconut water, one large piece of ginger, one orange, one lemon, two turmeric roots, one tablespoon of black pepper.
Method: Roughly chop your ginger and turmeric roots into blend-able pieces and put aside. Chop the rind off the lemon as well as the skin of the orange. Blend this with a dash of pepper and the coconut water till completely liquid.
This liquid however, will be chunky and rather textured. Pass it through a muslin cloth to obtain a clearer, digestible juice. Pour this out into 12 containers and start your morning with them.
The ingredients and quantities listed for this recipe will make about 12 shots. The concoction stores well in the refrigerator.
