BNP has held a meeting with the liaison committee of Hefazat-e-Islam and discussed the current situation of the country and the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The meeting was held at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office in Dhaka around 8pm on Saturday.
After the meeting, BNP’s standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, at a press briefing, called on the interim government to withdraw all cases filed against Hefazat-e-Islam leaders and activists within a short time.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also attended the meeting.
On the other hand, under the leadership of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh Secretary General Maulana Sajedur Rahman, Dr Ahmed Abdul Quader, Maulana Mahfuzul Haque, Maulana Mohiuddin Rabbani, Maulana Bahauddin Zakaria, Maulana Junaid Al Habib, Maulana Azizul Haque Islamabadi, and Mufti Monir Hossain Qasemi attended the meeting.
During the briefing, Salahuddin Ahmed said that the BNP also agreed to Hefazat-e-Islam’s demand for the trial of the Awami League as a political party over allegations of genocide and crimes against humanity.
“We have already openly made the same demand—bringing the Awami League to trial for committing genocide and crimes against humanity. We also placed the proposal before the government. If necessary, as per Article 47 of the Constitution, laws can be enacted,” Salahuddin added.
He also said that no visible progress has been seen regarding the cases filed in the International Crimes Tribunal.
The BNP leader further demanded an increase in the number of ICT courts and, if possible, the establishment of courts at the divisional level.
“We want reform and trial, but we also prioritise our transition to democracy,” he added.
About the election, the BNP leader said the Chief Adviser had earlier spoken about holding elections within December in his address to the nation.
“But most often, it is seen that the timeline is being shifted from December to June. At the same time, efforts are being made from different quarters to delay the election,” he said.
Salahuddin also demanded that the Chief Adviser announce a specific election roadmap within a short time.
