After days of scorching heat, a sudden rainfall brought much-needed relief to residents, especially in the capital, Dhaka, on Saturday evening.

The rain, which started at 7 pm, helped lower temperatures in Dhaka to 29 degrees Celsius, providing respite from the intense heatwave that had been gripping the country for several days.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the rainfall is a result of a brief monsoon shift.

Before the rain, temperatures across the country had been soaring, with Dhaka reaching a high of 37.2°C, making it one of the hottest days this year.

Local residents welcomed the rainfall, which not only reduced the oppressive heat but also temporarily eased high humidity levels, improving the air quality.

On Saturday (April 5), around 7 pm, the storm and rain began. Reports of storms and rain were received from various areas of the capital, including Mouchak, Malibagh, Farmgate, Banglamotor and Mogbazar.

Meanwhile, BMD  issued a warning for the country’s inland river ports, stating that due to rain and thunderstorms, gusty or squally winds with speeds of 45-60 km/h are expected in the regions of Jashore, Kushtia, Khulna, Faridpur, Dhaka, Tangail, and Sylhet.

River ports in these areas were advised to hoist cautionary signal number one (r).
