The court has sentenced Mohammad Rassell, the managing director (MD) of e-commerce company Evaly, and his wife, chairman Shamima Nasrin, to three years in prison each for fraud.
On Sunday, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Minhazur Rahman gave this verdict. In addition to the sentence, each was fined Tk 5,000 and, in default, was sentenced to six more months in prison.
The plaintiff's lawyer Sakibul Islam confirmed the matter. He said, "The accused are absconding. The court has issued an arrest warrant along with a sentence."
Evaly used to sell various products through various media through eye-catching advertisements. Attracted by this, Mujahid Hasan Fahim ordered a Yamaha R15 bike from their company on February 20, 2021 and he also paid for it. However, the authorities failed to deliver the bike within 45 days. Later, he contacted the Dhanmondi office. The authorities issued a check for five lakh taka. However, as there was not enough money in the bank account, he requested not to deposit the check in the bank on the specified date.
Believing the accused, he did not deposit the check in the bank. Later, the plaintiff kept demanding the money. However, they did not repaid the money to him. After this, no action was taken even after sending legal notices.
In this incident, Mujahid Hasan Fahim filed a case against Russell and Shamima in the court in January 2024.
On January 29, the court sentenced Mohammad Rassell and Shamima Nasrin to two years of imprisonment in a fraud case.
