Senior Congress leader and India’s 13th Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92, following a prolonged illness.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi reported that Dr. Singh was rushed to the emergency ward after losing consciousness at his home. Despite extensive resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead at 9:51 PM. He had been receiving treatment for age-related health conditions.
Renowned for his transformative impact on India’s economy, Dr. Singh served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. Earlier, as Finance Minister in 1991, he spearheaded landmark economic reforms that liberalized India’s economy, dismantled the License Raj, and attracted foreign direct investment (FDI). These measures are credited with steering India out of an economic crisis and laying the foundation for its rapid growth.
Tributes poured in from across the globe. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief, calling Dr. Singh “one of India’s most distinguished leaders” and a “respected economist.” In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Modi wrote, “As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives, leaving a lasting legacy on India’s economic policies.”
The Congress party hailed Dr. Singh’s quiet yet resolute leadership, describing him as a statesman who prioritized the nation’s welfare above all. “Dr. Singh’s legacy of economic reforms, political stability, and dedication to uplifting every Indian will endure for generations. He was a man of principles who made tough decisions with compassion and foresight,” the party stated.
International leaders also remembered Dr. Singh’s contributions. Former U.S. President Barack Obama once described him as “a chief architect of India’s economic transformation,” underscoring the global significance of his work.
Dr. Manmohan Singh’s life was a testament to dignity, wisdom, and humility. As a scholar, economist, and statesman, his visionary leadership reshaped India’s future. He leaves behind a profound legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
