The Chattogram Meteorological Office on Thursday recorded rain of 112 ml. in 24 hrs till Thursday morning. Moreover, till 12 pm on Thursday noon, 149.6 ml rain was recorded. On the other hand, the tidal bore started at 4.45 am and the ebb tide started at 10.51 am Thursday.
Due to heavy rain and high tide at the same time, most of the low lying areas of Chattogram metropolis have been submerged. Since last Wednesday night, it has been raining intermittently throughout the day. As a result people had to suffer alot. There is also a risk of landslides due to continuous rain. Meteorological department has issued local warning signal number 3 at Chattogram sea port. According to Met Office sources, there may be rain or thundershower with gusty wind speed of 45 to 60 km per hour temporarily over North Bay of Bengal, coastal areas and seaports. Moreover, there may be moderate to heavy rain at some places. Fishing boats and trawlers in the sea are asked to proceed cautiously close to the coast until further notice.
Assistant Meteorologist of Patenga Meteorological Office Ali Akbar said, “There is a lot of variation in air pressure in the northern Bay of Bengal and adjacent coastal areas of Bangladesh. As a result, deep convective clouds continue to form over the northern Bay of Bengal. So, moderate to heavy rains are happening in Chattogram. Such rain is likely to continue for two more days.”
According to the information recieved, the city's GEC intersection, Pravartak intersection, Panchlaish, Chawkbazar, Baklia, Chandgaon, Kapasgola, Shulakbahar, Agrabad, Halishahar, GEC intersection, Halishahar, gate number two, Muradpur, Bahaddarhat, Faridarpara, Chandgaon Residential Area, Katalganj, Kapasgola, Baripara, DC Road, Baklia, Chowkbazar Kachabazar, Rahmatganj, Atura depot area roads and alleys have been submerged. Waterlogging occurs in several low-lying areas. There is knee-deep water on the road and traffic is being blocked.
It is known that there is a risk of landslide due to heavy rainfall. At present there are 6, 558 vulnerable settlements in 26 hills in the city. Among them, there are more than 4,500 vulnerable settlements in the hills adjacent to Jheel (marshland) No. 1, 2 and 3 under Akbarshah police station. Families are living there with the fear of landslides in mind. The administration shifted them to shelters only when it rained continuously.
