Kurigram has been gripped by dense fog for the past four days, exacerbating the already harsh conditions caused by a cold wave that has left residents and visitors struggling. The ongoing cold spell has led to a rise in hospital visits, particularly among children and the elderly, who are most vulnerable to the cold.
Those residing in char areas, along riverbanks, and from low-income backgrounds are bearing the brunt of the cold, which is accompanied by dew-like rain drops. On Sunday morning, the local meteorological office recorded a temperature of 13°C at 6 am.
Rafiqul Islam, a day laborer from Kedar Union in Nageshwari Upazila, described the difficulty of enduring the frigid wind and thick fog. "Hands and legs get iced while working," he said. Similarly, Ashraful Hossain, an autorickshaw driver, explained the challenges of driving in such conditions. "We have to operate vehicles with headlights on or drive slowly, as the fog makes it hard to see even short distances."
Subal Chandra Sarkar, acting officer of the Kurigram weather office, warned that the district may face two to three more cold waves in the coming weeks as temperatures are expected to drop further this month.
