Brazil forward Neymar has reportedly donated $250,000 to support rescue and humanitarian efforts for victims of the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela.
According to Venezuelan news outlet El Sumario.com, the donation will help provide emergency food, drinking water, medical supplies and temporary shelter for those affected by the disaster.
"My heart goes out to the people of Venezuela," Neymar was quoted as saying. "I hope this contribution brings strength and relief to the affected families."
Twin earthquakes measuring 7.5 and 7.2 magnitude struck northern Venezuela on Wednesday, leaving widespread destruction and triggering a growing humanitarian crisis.
According to authorities, at least 1,430 people have been killed, 3,238 injured and more than 3,100 families displaced. Search-and-rescue operations are continuing despite frequent aftershocks and a shortage of heavy equipment.
A rescue operation also captured global attention after firefighters saved a dog trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed house. The team heard faint barking after completing their search, returned to the site and carefully removed debris before rescuing the animal. A widely shared video showed firefighters lowering a bottle of water through a narrow opening to keep the dog alive before pulling it to safety.
Meanwhile, Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti said Neymar has recovered well from injury and is now capable of playing longer periods as Brazil prepare to face Japan in the FIFA World Cup round of 32.
Neymar has an impressive record against Japan, scoring nine goals against the Asian side. His most memorable performance came in 2014, when he netted all four goals in Brazil's 4-0 victory, becoming only the eighth Brazilian player to score four goals in an international match.
